What happens when Zubin, Pete, & Akhil rock “Nutrition!” with a Starbucks spec video commercial?

The answer: They express what some of their peers (through pop culture) think about coffee’s nutritional values.

It’s always a pleasure to hear from my St. Theresa’s College-Cebu classmates, especially when they share news about their children’s accomplishments and achievements. This one is about Zubin. Watch the video carefully and look for that cool, young man in a green Starbucks apron.

Zubin Tejani is Marina (Yen) Hamoy’s son. Zubin is the result of a Philippines-India marriage. As a growing child, he travelled to many places including Canada, Thailand, Honduras, and of course, the Philippine Islands. I’m not sure how many languages he speaks.

Since I haven’t seen him since he was about 13 years old, it was quite amusing for me to watch this student hip-hopping on a specially-created “spec” Starbucks Coffee video ad. I wonder if Starbucks is negotiating with these young creatives right now.

Here’s Yen’s “mommy note” to her classmates:

Zubin turned 20 yesterday, so I cooked pancit at home while he’s still in Boston finishing up this year.

Here’s a video clip that he was part of. His friends, Pete and Akhil, asked him to participate in this nutrition class project, which they did on Starbucks.

Hi Tita Lorna,

Sorry for the late response. I’ve recently been hit with a tidal wave of work over the past few days, organizing my summer and moving back and forth between Boston and Maryland. But now i’m free and am more than happy to give you the written permission for our video.

The group we made was dubbed “The Beverage Coalition” and due to the success of our Starbucks Rap, we’ve gone on to make multiple videos for various purposes. More can be seen at http://youtube.com/results?search_query=beverage+coalition&search=Search.

Akhil Bhatt is from Wisconsin and is a film major in the College of Communication. Not only gifted with his technical abilities, Akhil’s creativity was a major component in making the Starbucks Rap a reality. Peter Lang-Stanton hails from close by in Mclean, VA but has lived much of life in Munich, Germany. He is a Psychology major in the College of Arts and Sciences. I am enrolled in BU’s School of Management, concentrating in Marketing and Entrepreneurship (minor in Advertising). From a simple Nutrition class project, we put our skills together to make the video as entertaining as possible.

“The Gangstarbucks Rap” was the product of our final project for a nutrition class at Boston University. In addition to our final paper, we created the video as a supplement to show to the rest of the class. Since then, the video has gone on to be featured on BU-TV as well as gaining acclaimed on-line recognition such as “Director’s Pick” on Yahoo video. We have recently been contacted by corporate representatives from Starbucks about the possibility of future work. The success of the video amazes us to this day. We thank all of our friends and family who have given us so much support in our effort to showcase our creativity.

Thanks for showing interest in our video Tita. My friends and I appreciate it. Hope the credits are okay. Let me know if i forgot to mention anything. I will be in Boston this summer so I may be nearby for July 4th. Be sure to keep in contact and hopefully we can meet up.

Thanks for everything,

Zubin
