Here is my nephew, Mark de Vera, in the University of San Francisco Dance Ensemble production that was held in the last weekend of April, 2007. You can tell that his martial arts training has helped him with his budding talent in modern dance.

EXCERPT ONE: From one of the vignettes. Mark is in the front row, second to the right. You can tell who he is. He has straight brown-blonde hair and a muscular build.

EXCERPT TWO: From “Citizen de Vera,” a dance named after him — and with Mark in the title role. Since this is a performing arts program that focuses on social justice, the dance is centered around the experiences of an immigrant who wants to become an American citizen by entering military service — only to die serving the United States. Quite heartbreaking. Mark performed beautifully!

And now, if we could only get the official videos. Thanks to my sister, Myrna, who taped these movies (after 19 years of videotaping her family in action), we can celebrate my family’s achievements and milestones!!!

JOE LARDI, A.K.A. JOSE DANIEL I. LARDIZABAL, SON OF MY LATE BROTHER. REUBEN “Ruben” V. LARDIZABAL

On February 2, 2008, I had a rare yahoo messenger chat with my nephew Joe (I call him Daniel) who is based in Cagayan de Oro City. We had a lovely time catching up on each other’s lives. I didn’t know that like his cousin, Lauren Dado, Joe plays in a band. It’s a bittersweet time for me since I first met Daniel in June 1990, a few weeks after he was born, in very sad circumstances. His biological dad, Ruben (or Bing), had passed away suddenly from Fulminant Hepatitis A. This is another story that needs to be told (one day, we promise)…

Watching Joe Lardi jammin’ on YouTube reminds me of three uncles — Uncle Virgilio (he died at 16 years old), Uncle Gione, and Uncle Eddie jammin’ in their Subangdaku, Mandaue home to The Beatles’ songs. I was about 8-9 years old. “It’s Been A Hard Day’s Night” was my particular favorite. They were in their early teens. Who knows, we might all be able to attend a Veloso Association reunion on December 13, 2008 in Tacloban City and my musically-inclined nieces and nephews can jam with the rest of the clan! Wow, that would be a blast!

In the meantime, look for “Joe” — who’s the guy with the “strings.” If his Lolo Joe Lardizabal could only see him now! He would be so proud!
