Words & Music That Heal

Spiritual sustenance comes in many forms. If you believe that religion and science are deeply connected, then you’ve come to the right page. If you don’t, please enjoy the words and music as “food for thought.” In my never-ending quest for serenity and peace, I started collecting music and words to nourish me. May you find something here that speaks to you, too.

OSHO SPEAKS: I Love To Disturb People
(video courtesy of OSHOInternational, YouTube.com. Click here to go directly to the YouTube.com link.)

A controversial meditator. Whatever controversies Osho stirs, he provokes me to think. That is what I am grateful for.

From Wikipedia: Rajneesh Chandra Mohan Jain (रजनीश चन्द्र मोहन जैन) (December 11, 1931 – January 19, 1990), better known during the 1960s as Acharya Rajneesh, then during the 1970s and 1980s as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and later taking the name Osho, was an Indian spiritual teacher. He lived in India and in other countries including, for a period, the United States, and inspired the Osho movement, a controversial spiritual and philosophical movement.

Annotations from YouTube.com: I Love to Disturb People. In a series of excerpts from an interview with Jeff McMullen of Australia’s “60 Minutes” Osho offers a series of one-liners about Gandhi, Hitler, the Pope and Mother Teresa — and goes on from there to talk about his reputation for being controversial, contradictory, and, in the words of the interviewer, “one of the funniest people I’ve ever met.”

I keep thinking that the Filipinos could learn a lot about transforming some of our beautiful islands to world-class “meditation resorts.” If we could come up with beautifully-appointed spas like “The Farm” or “Mandala Spa,” what about meditation retreats at Siquijor, for example? I know I’m not the only one who dreams about this…

Located in Pune, India, about 150 Km southeast of Mumbai, the resort and its OSHO Multiversity offer hundreds of courses, classes, and programs in self-discovery and meditation. Visitors from more than 100 countries visit this luxury resort, and participate in programs year-round.

On September 13, 2001 (two days after 9-11), I found myself in U.C. Berkeley, listening to the Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. He told the audience about his successful two-week retreats wherein he brought people from Israel and Palestine together — in peace. What I remember most is his appeal to governments to have a special committee of decision makers, which he called, “Committee of Deep Listening.” He’s right. If we listen deeply, we can think clearly, and act clearly.

HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA: Excerpts from the documentary, “Dalai Lama Renaissance” with Harrison Ford
(video courtesy of Khashyar, YouTube.com. Click here to go directly to the YouTube.com link.)

I am glad that I made the time in May of 2001 to go with friends to the Shoreline Ampitheatre in Mountain View, California, for three days (or was it four days?) of teachings from HH The Dalai Lama and other spiritual leaders. What an uplifting experience! I would do it all over again… I was guilty of celebrity-watching, of course, such as ogling over Pierce Brosnan during that Saturday night, who talked to about 25,000 of us. What I remember most was getting quite emotional when Buddhist nuns from the different lineages sang their songs and mantras onstage. Seeing His Holiness The Dalai Lama for the first time convinced me that I had to transform my smoking habit to compassionate habits.

Within this timeframe, Dinah, one of my friends in Los Angeles, convinced a High Lama to give her an admission ticket to His Holiness’s teachings when tickets had been sold out. The High Lama finally relented, quite amazed at my friend’s persistence. Dinah gave me the necklace that the High Lama gave her — which had been blessed by His Holiness. There are times when people see me wearing this necklace without knowing that it symbolizes “a gift of compassion for myself and others.” I keep it close to my heart to remind me of my intentions.

THE LIFE AND DEATH OF A SAND MANDALA

Annotations from YouTube.com.

Filmed April 10th 2007, at a Buddhist shrine in Chichester, this video tells the story of a sand painting born only the day before.

In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the Mandala is brought to an end, honouring the Buddhas teaching of ‘impermanence’ : that all things arise and fade away – that all things are temporary in nature.

In the video you will see many members of the local and visiting Tibetan Buddhist commuity contributing to the growth of the mandala, including the special guest Dr Akong Tulku Rinpoche.

Many thanks to David Mackenzie-Dewhirst for his kind help and guidance in making the mandala, and should anyone like to enquire further about sand mandalas or other therapeutic artforms he practices, he can be contacted at:

www.artmatters.nhs.uk

The word Mandala is sanskrit and litterally means ‘Circle’ & ‘Center’, it suggests the notion that any centre is tied to it’s circumferance, and that any circumferance is always determined by it’s center, together they represent a wholeness.

The Making Of The Mandala:

Traditionally, the sand for madalas is made by crushing precious and semi-precious stones such as coral and turquoise amber etc, but this is no longer done. The sand is dyed using vegetable dyes or opaque tempera or acrylics, it is applied to the mandala disc (base) with a narrow metal funnel called a ‘chakpu’, which is tapped against to cause sufficient vibration for grains of sand to trickle out of its end. Stray grains of sand are moved back into place with small brushes, no adhesives are used to maintain the position of the sand.

Mandalas to Promote Health & Healing:

There has been medical research to show that the bodies immune system and innate healing ability are enhanced when we are relaxed, creativity appears to trigger the bodies relaxation response, promoting one’s own health and healing and increasing stress reduction.
Finally:

In the dismantling of the mandala one should remain in the same relaxed and meditative state of mind, as in its creation. Mandala’s can help us to understand that all things are impermanent and exist only in relation to, and in independence on other things.

The Kagyu tradition is one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. It is reknowned for its emphasis on meditation as embodied by such great masters as Marpa, Milarepa and Gampopa, whose example inspired people throughout Tibet.

The supreme head of the Kagyu lineage is the Karmapa.

Kagyu Samye Dzong London is a branch of Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery in Scotland, a Buddhist Centre which was established in 1967 and now has branches worldwide. Kagyu Samye Dzong London is under the direct guidance of Dr. Akong Tulku Rinpoche and Ven.Lama Yeshe Losal, whose lives and activity are an endless source of inspiration for the thousands of people who come into contact with them every year. They are known for their tireless efforts in preserving the purity of the Buddha’s teachings, and the Kagyu lineage in particular and they visit Kagyu Samye Dzong London regularly giving teachings, guidance and empowerments. The day to day guidance of the centre is by Lama Zangmo.

THE HEALING POWER OF SUFI MEDITATION
(video courtesy of NurMir, YouTube.com. Click here to go directly to the YouTube.com link.)

Sufism: Basic beliefs

The essence of Being/Truth/God is devoid of every form and quality, and hence unmanifested, yet it is inseparable from every form and phenomenon either material or spiritual. It is often understood to imply that every phenomenon is an aspect of Truth and at the same time attribution of existence to it is false. The chief aim of all Sufis then is to let go of all notions of duality, therefore the individual self also, and realize the divine unity.

Sufis teach in personal groups, as the interaction of the master is considered necessary for the growth of the pupil. They make extensive use of parable, allegory, and metaphor, and it is held by Sufis that meaning can only be reached through a process of seeking the truth, and knowledge of oneself. Although philosophies vary between different Sufi orders, Sufism as a whole is primarily concerned with direct personal experience, and as such may be compared to various forms of mysticism such as Zen Buddhism and Gnosticism.

A significant part of Persian literature comes from the Sufis, who created books of poetry (which include for example the Walled Garden of Truth, Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, the Conference of the Birds and the Masnavi), all of which contain teachings of the Sufis.
